Fennelly confirms Laois hurling panel

Recently-appointed Laois senior hurling manager Brendan Fennelly has announced his 28-man panel for the 2011 campaign.

Castletown's Patrick Mullaney returns after a 12-month absence, with the former Ireland senior Hurling-Shinty International custodian one of two goalkeepers named in the squad.

Abbeyleix's Eoin Reilly, who captained the Ireland U-21 Hurling-Shinty team to victory over Scotland in October, is the other goalkeeper listed.

Rathdowney-Errill provide five players to the Laois panel for 2011, with this year's Laois captain Brian Campion, Shane Dollard, Joe Fitzpatrick, Owen Houlihan and John Purcell included from the county champions.

The Harps provide the biggest contingent with six players from the club set to pull on the Laois jersey in 2011. They are John Brophy, Brian and Conor Dunne and John Prior, along with newcomers Brian Galvin and Sean Bourke included.

Clough-Ballacolla provide four players, with John A Delaney, Willie Hyland, Darren Maher and Mick McEvoy making the cut.

Meanwhile, there are two players each from Portlaoise, Borris-in-Ossory and Camross, while Ballinakill, Colt, Kilcotton and Mountmellick all provide one player each to the squad.

Fennelly is not closing the door on players not named in the squad. Emigration is a major concern for the Kilkenny native as a number of players have been contemplating moving abroad in search of work after Christmas, and it remains to be seen who he will have at his disposal.

Ballinakill's John Walsh is just one of those not listed, but it is believed that the talented DIT Fitzgibbon Cup player is keen to get involved.

Walsh took time out from the Laois senior team this year due to his musical commitments, but was a regular starter in defence in previous campaigns.

Laois open their 2011 season with a Walsh Cup clash with the students of UCD at home on January 16.
